The Power of YET

A while ago I posted on Instagram about what I would do if I wasn’t too old. I was asked this question a year or so ago and I came up with a long list of things that I would have loved to be good at. I was then asked - Who says you’re too old?

Wow! I couldn’t answer. Me? Society?

It was a real paradigm shift for me. Since that moment I have taken up and fallen in love with surfing. I am so glad that I realised I wasn’t too old as it has really added to my life. It makes me feel alive and free and I love that my boys get to witness that side of me.

BUT starting to learn to surf at 38 years old was brutal! There were times that I felt I wasn’t getting anywhere. Although I enjoyed being in the sea I found it frustrating.

‘I can’t do it’ I would say to myself, ‘I clearly just don’t have the ability or the stamina needed. I’ve left it too late’.

I had been reading a book about growth mindsets for some children I had been working with. And I realised that the language I was using (to myself) wasn’t helping the situation.

I began adding a yet onto the end of my negative self-talk.

I can’t do it YET, (but I’m bloody well going to keep trying).

YET, YET, YET.

Adding a yet makes anything possible.

It’s a great one to try with children too.

Give it a go. It might just change your life.
